The ecological festival "Cranes and Cranberries of the Miory Region" will be held on September 19, 2026

Since 2012, an environmental festival "Cranberries and Cranes of the Miory Region" has been held in September in the Miory district.

The choice of this unusual festival is not accidental: it is in September that the cranberry harvesting season begins here, and the Yalnya bog holds the first place in Belarus in terms of berry reserves. In addition, the Miory district annually hosts over 4,000 grey cranes and tens of thousands of geese of various species that stop to rest at the Yalnya bog during their autumn migration. It is about berries and birds – as unique features of the Miory region – that the local residents tell.

For convenience, everyone willing was transported from the district center to the surrounding fields with birds, which feed there during daylight hours. Everyone could observe a large number of common cranes and take unforgettable photos. The excursions were conducted by professional ornithologists.

In addition to vivid encounters with birds, festival guests could participate in ecological games, choose the best estate of the Miory district in the nomination "The Wealth of Yalnya on Our Courtyard", buy souvenirs made by local craftsmen as a memento of the holiday, and also try cranberry juice, various cranberry sweets and purchase these berries for future use in winter. They could also choose the "Miory Cranberry".

About the republican landscape reserve "Yalnya"

The "Yelnya" заказник is located in the Miory and Sharkovshchyna districts of the Vitebsk region (25,301 ha).

The заказник was established to preserve the Yelnya swamp and its surroundings during a drainage campaign. The "Yelnya" заказник is a Ramsar site of international importance for birds.

* A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance as a habitat for waterfowl and wetland birds.

* An Important Bird Area is a territory vital for the survival of one or more bird species during nesting, wintering, or migration.

The "Yelnya" swamp is one of the largest raised bogs in Belarus and all of Europe, with over 100 lakes within its territory.

The Yelnya swamp is over 9,000 years old.

Swamps are called raised bogs because their center rises above the edge, sometimes by 7-9 m.

Interesting facts about cranberries

The English name for cranberry (Cranberry) translates to "Crane berry". This name was given to cranberries by American settlers. The long, thin cranberry flowers reminded the settlers of the head and beak of a crane.

The genus name for cranberry comes from the Greek words "oxis" - sharp, sour and "coccus" - spherical, i.e., literally "sour ball".

Good ripe cranberries will bounce if dropped on a hard surface. Therefore, in English, it is also sometimes called Bounceberry

Interesting facts about cranes

The common crane is one of the largest birds in Europe - up to 140 cm tall, with a wingspan of more than 2 meters.

Cranes spend the night in swamps and feed during the day on crop residues in the surrounding fields within a 20-30 km radius of the swamp.

They build their nests on the ground or in marshy areas with shallow water.

Cranes form lifelong pairs and stay together all year round.

They feed on berries, seeds, insects, mollusks, other small animals, and plants.

The departure of common cranes for wintering lasts throughout October and sometimes extends into November.

Cranes fly in flocks, forming a wedge formation, during the day and usually at high altitudes.

Flocks during the autumn migration are significantly larger than in spring.

Dances are observed in all seasons and can be performed by a single bird, pairs, or even a flock on nesting grounds, during feeding stops, and at resting places.

The common crane has been listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus since 1981.
