Miory District was established on January 15, 1940. It is located in the northwest of Vitebsk Region and the Republic of Belarus, bordering Braslav District, Sharkovshchyna District, Glubokoye District, Polotsk District, and the Republic of Latvia.
The area is 1780 square kilometers. 20% of the district's territory is covered by forests, predominantly spruce, pine, and mixed. "Chistaya Dubrava" in the Yozna Village Council is a natural monument of republican significance.
Miory District is a corner of the Belarusian Lake District. The district has 96 bodies of water, including 83 lakes. The largest is Obsterne, with an area of 9.35 sq. km and a depth of up to 12 meters. The deepest is Sumovka (29 meters). Of the 16 rivers flowing through the district, the largest are the Western Dvina and its tributary, the Disna.
About 17% of the territory is occupied by swamps. The largest raised bog in Europe, "Yelnya," covers an area of 20,000 hectares. It is famous for remnants of post-glacial tundra. Over 30 species of plants and animals listed in the Red Book have been preserved here. The "Yelnya" Republican Landscape Reserve is one of the most unique protected areas in Belarus. "Boloto-Mokh" is a hydrological reserve of republican significance.
