May 2nd is the International Day for Biological Diversity.
The theme for May 22, 2026, is "Local Action – Global Effect." This motto emphasizes that global goals are achievable only through the sum of local actions, and preserving life on Earth begins with the specific yard, forest, river, or city park near one's home.
This is the only viable survival strategy in the modern world. Biodiversity is not preserved "in general"; it is preserved here and now: in the soil beneath our feet, in the water of the nearest pond, in the birds that come to the feeder. Realizing this simple truth and transitioning to consistent actions in one's own locality is what will transform our local actions into the desired global effect.
Biological diversity (biodiversity) in general means the entire multifaceted nature of life around us. As a product of billions of years of evolution, plants, animals, and microorganisms have developed under the influence of natural factors. In recent years, humans have become one of these factors. Despite this, we are still just one form of life and are closely connected to a rich, living, evolving planet.
