Autumn fishing draws many to water bodies; however, it should be remembered that the risk of boating accidents increases during the autumn season. By this time, the water is already cold, and if a boat capsizes and a fisherman falls into the water, soaked clothing will weigh them down toward the bottom, restricting movement. Consequently, self-rescue can be quite difficult.

Between October and November 2024 alone, three incidents involving small vessels occurred within the Vitebsk Region, resulting in four fatalities. In total, since the beginning of 2024, seven such incidents have taken place in the Vitebsk Region, claiming eight lives. In every instance, the individuals involved were not wearing life jackets!

The State Inspectorate for Small Ships (GIMS) of the Vitebsk Region, addressing small vessel owners, currently urges anglers to refrain from fishing from boats. Sub-zero air temperatures and cold water offer no chance of survival if one ends up in icy water. Death occurs when body temperature drops below 26 degrees (approximately 30 minutes in cold water). When situated far from shore, even a properly worn life jacket may not provide assistance. During the cold season, any incident involving your vessel (such as capsizing, loss of watertight integrity, etc.) or falling overboard will likely end tragically! Please reflect on this! Ensure your own safety and do not take risks!

Do not neglect wearing a life jacket, as it significantly increases your chances of survival! Exercise caution, safeguard yourself, and assist anyone who encounters difficulties on the water!
