In advance of the unified greening day and the launch of the “Give the Forest New Life” campaign, a press conference was held where experts spoke about the upcoming events.
As stated by Marina Galich, Head of the Department for Control over the Protection and Use of Land, Subsoil, Biodiversity, and Particularly Protected Natural Areas of the Vitebsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, active greening work is underway in populated areas across the region. This year, the plan for planting shrubs, trees, and flowers has been increased by approximately 10% compared to 2024.
“In total, the planting of 38,000 trees and 28,000 shrubs is planned for 2025. Much has already been accomplished: 28,000 trees and over 21,000 shrubs have been planted,” Marina Galich noted. “For example, a square has been developed in Chashniki, and a park with a memorial avenue has been established in Glubokoe, where more than 300 spruce seedlings were planted.”
Tomorrow, tree planting will take place in Vitebsk at the Millennium Park, near the Square of the Flag and Coat of Arms. One hundred linden trees will be planted. In Polotsk, the creation of a park zone on the Mound of Immortality will continue, and in Dokshitsy, cherry and pine avenues will be established.
Yuri Apalko, Head of the Forestry and Reforestation Department of the Vitebsk State Forestry and Reforestation Enterprise, provided details on the “Give the Forest New Life” campaign, which is taking place in Belarus from October 11 to 31.
“The Ministry of Forestry initiated the campaign. It aims to promote the forestry sector and restore damaged areas of the forest fund, including those affected by strong winds. Across the region, it is planned to restore forests covering approximately 150 hectares, as well as supplement previously established forest plantations on an area of no less than 2,000 hectares. Approximately 2 million seedlings and saplings of main forest-forming species will be planted: pine, spruce, birch, as well as oak, ash, and maple,” Yuri Apalko stated. “The campaign will take place in all 18 forestry enterprises. To participate, individuals should contact their nearest forestry enterprise. Additionally, specific sites have been identified where volunteers can simply carry out landscaping, remove trash, and tidy up, thereby contributing to the improvement of forest territories.”
At the press conference, plans and ongoing landscaping works for the regional center were discussed. As Director Valentina Shendyukova of the State Enterprise "Vitebsk Greenstroy" noted, this year it is planned to plant approximately 125 thousand tulips in the city: 87.6 thousand in the city center (in the area of Victory Square and the 1000th Anniversary Square) and 50 thousand on Freedom Square. In total, throughout the season, approximately 1 million 200 thousand flowers will be planted in the city, including bulbous plants.
