On the Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and Russia, a sapling of the famous Poplar of Victory, which survived the Battle of Stalingrad, was planted on the grounds of the Botanical Garden in Vitebsk.
– Time has proven the inseparable bond and friendship between the peoples of Belarus and Russia, which is based on principles of trust, respect, mutual support, and shared spiritual and moral values. On the eve of this date, at the invitation of the Volgograd region, a delegation from Vitebsk participated in the ceremonial transfer of the Stalingrad poplar sapling in Moscow. This is a unique tree that was planted even before the Great Patriotic War. Today, it embodies the courage and resilience of the Soviet people, serves as a symbol of rebirth, and is a memory that will endure through the years, – noted Olga Ivanova, Chairwoman of the Vitebsk City Council of Deputies.
Today, the long-lived poplar grows on the Square of Fallen Fighters in Volgograd. Its trunk was literally covered with "scars" and "abrasions" from bullets and shells. However, in the spring of 1943, after the city was liberated from the German-fascist invaders, the tree bloomed. To preserve the memory of the great feat of the people during the Great Patriotic War, Russian scientists created a nursery of Poplar of Victory saplings using microclonal propagation. Thus, since 2017, a federal public campaign with the same name has been launched, under which unique clones have begun to be planted in cities across Russia.
Vitebsk became the first city in our country to receive a sapling of the Poplar of Victory. It was planted on peaceful Belarusian soil, reminding us of the shared heroic history of Belarus and Russia.
