Year after year, road accidents have claimed and continue to claim hundreds of human lives on the roads of the Republic. It would seem that every pedestrian knows the risks of a collision with a car. And out of fear of the consequences alone, people should be cautious. But many pedestrians have become too indifferent to life.

Special attention should be paid to underage pedestrians. This is one of the most uncontrollable categories of road users, which causes the most problems and concerns.

Among the causes of accidents involving elderly pedestrians, age-related changes in the body play a significant role: slowed reaction, poor eyesight and hearing, and poor orientation in intense traffic. There are many reasons for hitting pedestrians, but one of the main ones is their failure to fulfill their duties and lack of safe behavior skills.

Due to the arrival of autumn and the early onset of darkness, the danger for people on the road increases significantly. Statistical data confirms that most accidents occur precisely in the dark. In the pre-dawn hours, many pedestrians, rushing to work, cross the street in the wrong place or against a red light. The same situation is observed when returning from work; the number of traffic violations by this category of road users also increases. Haste and indiscipline lead to accidents. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that a pedestrian or cyclist illuminated by the headlights of an approaching car is firmly convinced that they are clearly visible to the driver, although this is far from the case. A person walking in the dark on the roadway becomes visible to the motorist only from a distance of 25-30 meters. At a speed of 90 km/h, a car covers this distance in just one second, which is too little time to take any action. Even at a speed of 50 km/h, the stopping distance of a car exceeds this distance.

Approximately 50% of all road traffic accidents occur during dark hours. Driving a vehicle during this time period is quite challenging from the perspective of driver performance and selecting a safe driving mode. Night driving is always more dangerous because the driver cannot see far ahead and anticipate changes in situations. Thus, a pedestrian, by marking themselves with retroreflective elements, contributes to ensuring road safety.

During the event period, traffic police officers will pay special attention to suppressing traffic violations by pedestrians and cyclists.
